The Invisible Load of CHD Moms đź’”: How to Lighten the Mental Weight
There’s a kind of exhaustion no one talks about.
It’s not just physical—it’s the kind that comes from juggling a thousand invisible tasks while holding your breath, hoping your child’s heart keeps beating strong. 💔
If you’re a mom navigating life with a child who has pediatric congenital heart disease (CHD), you already know: this journey demands everything. From remembering the date of the next echocardiogram to explaining medical terms to school staff, to managing your own fear while comforting your child through blood draws—you’re carrying an extraordinary load.
Let’s talk about that.
The Invisible Load of CHD Moms đź§
Most people see the surface: hospital visits, surgery recoveries, medical bills. But the real weight often hides in the quiet corners of your mind:
-
- đź“… Tracking every appointment, every lab result, every medication dose
-
- 🧾 Managing insurance calls, prior authorizations, and medical records
-
- ❤️ Being the emotional rock for your CHD warrior—and everyone else
-
- 🧸 Making sure your other kids feel seen, even when you’re stretched thin
-
- đź’¸ Worrying about bills, co-pays, missed work, and financial fallout
-
- 🔄 Replaying tough decisions—Did I catch that diagnosis early enough? Did I ask the right questions?
This is mental labor. Emotional labor. And it is real.
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why can’t I just get it together?” I want to lovingly remind you:
You’re not lazy. You’re overloaded.
And you deserve support.
Peace and Pardon: Two Keys to Lightening the Load đź’–
Inside my Heartstrings coaching program, I teach a powerful framework I call the 4 P’s of Faith: Pardon, Power, Peace, and Purpose. Let’s look at how Pardon and Peace can help release some of the weight you’re carrying.
Pardon means understanding—deep in your bones—that this is not your fault.
You didn’t cause your child’s heart condition. You didn’t miss something. You didn’t fail.
This is one of the hardest truths for CHD moms to fully accept, but once you do? The guilt softens. The self-blame quiets. You start to breathe again.
Peace comes when you stop trying to do it all alone.
You don’t have to keep every lab result in your head. You don’t have to parent perfectly while functioning as a part-time nurse, scheduler, and advocate. Peace is found in systems, support, and surrendering what isn’t yours to carry.
Let’s talk about how to get there.
Practical Ways to Lighten the Mental Weight đź’Ş
You can’t pour from an empty cup—but you can build systems that lighten your load and support your mental well-being. Start with these gentle, doable strategies:
📝 Do a Brain Dump
Grab a journal or open a note on your phone. List everything on your mind—appointments, worries, bills, tasks, things you “should” be doing. Don’t censor. Just release it all.
This single act helps clear mental clutter and can lower anxiety almost immediately. From there, highlight what actually needs action this week, and what can wait.
📆 Share the Calendar
Use a shared calendar with your partner, older kids, or a trusted friend to offload tracking responsibilities. Color-code appointments, set reminders, and tag tasks like prescription refills or IEP meetings.
You don’t have to carry all the mental tabs. Let others help track the details.
🤝 Build your Circle of Support
You are not alone.
There are other CHD moms who get it—the lingo, the fear, the wins, the grief. Whether in person or online, connection with other moms walking this path can be a lifeline.
Start with trusted communities like:
-
- The Ollie Hinkle Heart Foundation
Or join my Heartstrings community for moms who want both expert insight and authentic emotional support.

🌿 Practice Micro Moments of Peace
Not everything has to be a 30-minute meditation. Peace can live in 3-minute rituals:
-
- A warm mug of tea with no distractions
-
- A deep breath before opening the portal app
-
- Listening to your favorite song
-
- Lighting a candle at the end of a long day and saying, “I did enough today.”
You Deserve a Support Plan That’s About You, Too
So many CHD moms tell me, “I feel like I’m constantly overwhelmed.”
And I always ask: What would it feel like to be fully supported? To have help in all areas.
That’s exactly why I created Heartstrings, my 9-week coaching program for moms of children with CHD.
In our very first Discovery Call, we gently begin to untangle the overwhelm, quiet the guilt, and build your version of sustainable peace and strength.
Because you deserve more than just surviving this journey.
You deserve to feel empowered, informed, and deeply supported.
A Final Word of Encouragement 🙌
